We continued the Widening Impacts Spring Webinar Series with its third session on Friday, March 7th, 2025. In this session, we learned about the EU-funded COALition project, which is being implemented in three carbon-intensive regions: Western Macedonia (Greece), Centru (Romania), and Southeastern Bulgaria. The project aims to establish an excellence hub in each of these regions, focusing on providing support in research and innovation (R&I), entrepreneurship, and the reskilling and upskilling of the affected workforce. This initiative is part of a broader European effort to strengthen regional innovation excellence within place-based innovation ecosystems through cross-border collaboration on a unified strategy and value-adding chains.
Given that the participating regions are located in the heart of ecosystems undergoing transition, both the challenges and opportunities will be addressed within this context. Furthermore, the project seeks to create synergies with the Just Transition Fund to enhance innovation and provide financial support for excellence in sectors related to sustainable energy.
