The “WIDERA Excellence Hubs: MED and SEE Region” online workshop, held on February 20, 2024, brought together leaders in innovation and research across the Mediterranean (MED) and Southeast European (SEE) regions to foster collaboration and share achievements within the EU-funded WIDERA program of Horizon Europe. Hosted by the MetaCities Excellence Hub and NCP_WIDERA.NET, the event underscored the European Union’s commitment to advancing research and development through the WIDERA (Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area) initiative.

A key highlight of the workshop was the participation of Joerg Niehoff, Deputy Head of Unit for ERA Governance and Implementation at the European Commission. Niehoff’s insights underscored the EU’s dedication to facilitating cross-border collaborations that drive innovation and strengthen the European Research Area (ERA). His contributions further emphasized the importance of aligning regional initiatives with broader European objectives.

Several Excellence Hubs showcased their impactful projects, including MetaCities, VELES, COALition, EXCEL4MED, Carbonica, SeaTecHub, CHAngeing, SolarHub, inno2mare, and GlaCerHub. Each hub presented unique approaches to regional challenges, from sustainable energy solutions to advanced medical technologies, reflecting the diverse scope of the WIDERA program. This collective participation illuminated how these hubs are pioneering innovation through local partnerships, knowledge exchange, and forward-thinking research that contribute to Europe’s economic and technological advancement.

Overall, the workshop marked a pivotal moment in advancing collaboration across MED and SEE regions, underscoring the EU’s commitment to research excellence and inclusive growth.
